OAC I: Language and Literature-Course Code: ENGOA
Your work at the OAC level in English will require that you become increasingly adept at thinking and working independently. You will be expected to take considerable responsibility for your own learning. In this course, you will study a wide variety of literature from various time periods and countries, including Canada. Extensive reading will be balanced with close textual analysis to develop critical thinking skills and an appreciation of the uses of language.
1/3 of class time will be devoted to writing in a variety of modes for various purposes and audiences. There will be considerable emphasis on formulating and developing hypotheses.
OAC II: Writer's Craft-Course Code: EWCOA
*Note-you must have taken OAC I to enroll in this course, or have OAC I in the same semester.
The purpose of this course is to allow you to refine your skills as a writer. It will be assumed that one learns to write through understanding the writing of others, through understanding the workings of language itself, particularly as a way of "making meaning" and through constant practice of the skills of writing, revising, and editing.
You should expect to read and discuss many short pieces of writing as well as excerpts from longer pieces. Much of your class time will be spent working co-operatively with others on developing, revising, and editing your own writing and theirs. Planning, goal-setting and evaluation of progress are responsibilities that you will share with the teacher and your classmates.
The final mark in this course will be based on a balance of the work done in class, the work collected in your writing folder, an independent study project, and a final examination.
OAC III: Studies In Literature-Course Code: ELIOA
*Note-you must have taken OAC I to enroll in this course, or have OAC I in the same semester. Only one OAC III will count towards a diploma
If you have a special interest in literature, this course has been designed with you in mind. Authors for exploration include Shakespeare, Emily Bronte, Hawthorn, and the Romantic poets, as well as those authors that you select. You will be introduced to many of the historical and literary concepts that underlie the Renaissance, the Victorian Era, and the Romantic Era. Independent Study and library research are a vital part of the program. There will be many opportunities to practice your research, presentation, editing, and essay writing skills.
